SKINCARE BY AGE GROUP: YOUR GUIDE

A good skincare routine can make a huge difference to the way your skin looks and feels, as well as how your skin ages over time. But what worked in your 20s might not work the same way in your 50s, as the natural ageing process dramatically alters the skin's behaviour. So how do you tailor a skincare routine for your age? Let’s take a look at how each age group should care for their skin.

SKINCARE TIPS FOR EVERY AGE GROUP

We all know how different skin types have different skin issues, but it’s also true that different skin ages have different skin concerns. This is why you should not only consider skincare for your skin type, but also based on your age, so you can address the right aspects of your ever-changing skin. Remember: ageing skin is a natural process, and what's most important is strengthening your skin's current condition, not preventing the ageing process altogether.

SKINCARE FOR TEENAGERS

In your teens, hormonal changes trigger an increase in sebum production, which can lead to oily, greasy skin, blocked pores and blemishes. Because breakouts in teenagers are so common, teens should look for skincare that purifies the skin and manages excess sebum while maintaining the skin moisture barrier. Teens should also be using sunscreen every day as they are more likely to be outside and expose themselves to UV rays.

DO

  • Use a gentle cleanser formulated for oil/blemish control.
  • Keep skincare simple with non-comedogenic, fragrance-free products.
  • Hydrate with lightweight humectants like hyaluronic acid.

DON’T

  • Use pore-clogging ingredients.
  • Skip sunscreen—not even in winter!
  • Pick at or pop pimples as this can lead to spots and marks.

SKINCARE IN YOUR 20S

Your skincare routine in your 20s will play a large role in how your skin ages, including the development of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as sunspots and discolouration. Keep your routine simple, with a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen. You can also incorporate a vitamin C serum to protect against environmental aggressors which also impact how the skin ages.

During your early 20s you may still be struggling with excess oil production and stick with blemish-control skincare for a few more years. Later on, in your mid-late 20s, as collagen production slowly declines you might start to gradually introduce a retinol product to your routine. Just make sure to balance out any skin-drying products with moisture-locking products.

DO

  • Protect from free radical damage with vitamin C.
  • Strengthen the skin moisture barrier with lightweight moisturiser.
  • Introduce exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and excess oil.

DON’T

  • Fight breakouts with very harsh formulas or ingredients.
  • Go to bed with your makeup on: this can clog the pores and lead to breakouts.
  • Start anti-ageing skincare too early—only introduce these products during your late 20s to early 30s.

SKINCARE IN YOUR 30S

Skincare in your 30s will focus similarly on preventative measures to minimise visible signs of ageing, but with a bigger focus on deep hydration. With the decline in collagen production, the skin cell turnover slowing down, and the loss of facial volume, now is the best time to start using retinol regularly, combined with a vitamin C serum to prevent free radical damage that contributes to premature ageing. Combine these products with hydrating, moisture-locking ingredients to maintain soft, plump skin.

DO

  • Support skin cell turnover with retinol for more youthful-looking skin.
  • Protect from free radical damage and brighten skin with vitamin C.
  • Incorporate a rich night cream into your evening routine.
  • Use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores.

DON’T

  • Layer too many products and serums.
  • Forget your most important anti-ageing product, sunscreen.
  • Use harsh exfoliants that strip away the skin moisture barrier.

SKINCARE IN YOUR 40S

During your 40s, ageing skin concerns become more pronounced, with deeper wrinkles and the appearance of age spots. Collagen and elastin production will have declined quite significantly, and your skin won’t be able to retain moisture the same way. The skin appears more textured and dry, and the outer layer of skin cells will start to thin out, meaning dark circles might also be more obvious. During this time in your life, pay more attention to anti-ageing skincare products that address skin elasticity, skin texture, and discoloration.

DO

  • Address age spots with niacinamide.
  • Restore skin elasticity and firmness with retinol and peptides.
  • Add a hydrating serum to support more youthful-looking skin.
  • Deeply hydrate the under eyes and lips with an eye cream and lip care.

DON’T

  • Use strong exfoliating products or blemish control ingredients.
  • Forget your sunscreen, as sun protection is essential at every age.
  • Rub, itch, or use harsh products around the delicate under-eye area.

SKINCARE IN YOUR 50S

By your 50s you’ll see how the skincare in your younger years has paid off. Accumulated pigment from years of sun exposure will appear as age spots, which will have been minimised if you were regularly protecting your skin. Moisture levels will continue to decrease, and wrinkles will deepen. In your 50s, facial oils that nourish and hydrate are your best allies, and ingredients for skin discolouration will help visibly fade dark spots.

DO

  • Address uneven skin tone with niacinamide and melasyl.
  • Maintain skin elasticity and plumpness with moisture trapping lipids like peptides.
  • Deeply nourish mature skin with facial oils containing active ingredients.
  • Add an eye cream to nourish the delicate under eye skin.

DON’T

  • Skip cleanser: instead, use a gentle cleanser with mild ingredients to prevent dry skin.
  • Use too many products; less really is more.
  • Forget to pamper your skin with a hydrating face mask.

SKINCARE IN YOURS 60S+

From age 60 and onwards, skin is especially prone to drying out, and collagen production is very low. Skin will sag and hyperpigmentation from visible sun damage will be the most pronounced; especially if you haven’t been consistently using sunscreen. The goal should never be to try to reverse the clock, but to keep your skin hydrated and your moisture barrier strengthened.

DO

  • Deeply hydrate the skin to soften fine lines and wrinkles
  • Maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle to strengthen the skin from within
  • Incorporate soothing ingredients like vitamin B5

DON’T

  • Use harsh exfoliants or skincare products.
  • Pull at or rub the skin as this can worsen skin sagging.
  • Forget to protect from the sun to prevent age spots from darkening.
