HOW TO CHOOSE SUNSCREEN FOR DRY SKIN

Broad-spectrum, high SPF sunscreen is essential to every daily skincare routine. But for dry skin, a common concern is that wearing sunscreen can exacerbate their dryness. While some sunscreen formulas contain ingredients like alcohol that can dry out the skin further, many formulas are suitable and developed for dry and sensitive skin. Read on for our tips on how to choose the right sunscreen for dry skin.

CAN SUNSCREEN CAUSE DRY SKIN?

Some formulas may lead to dry skin, especially if they contain irritants or if your skin is already sensitive. However, not all sunscreen dries the skin. In fact, if you’re skipping sunscreen you’re likely exacerbating your dry skin concerns, as UV radiation has numerous adverse effects on the skin’s appearance and overall condition. If you’re concerned about sunscreen causing dry skin, there are sunscreen formulas that provide hydrating skin benefits in addition to sun protection

WHAT TYPE OF SUNSCREEN IS BEST FOR DRY SKIN?

If you’re concerned about dry skin, choose a sunscreen formula that has a slightly richer texture, formulated with hydrating and nourishing ingredients. While you aren’t as prone to pore clogging as oily skin, you should still look for a non-comedogenic sunscreen that’s fragrance-free to avoid irritation.

WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN SUNSCREEN FOR DRY SKIN?

The key to sunscreen for dry skin is hydration, so look for products formulated with humectants, emollients or other nourishing ingredients. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, among others, work well in a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

TIPS FOR SUNSCREEN FOR DRY SKIN

1.     BROAD-SPECTRUM, HIGH SPF

Like all skin types, sunscreen should be broad-spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays) and have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher. This is the best way to protect against UV exposure that can exacerbate your dry skin concerns.

2.      OPT FOR HYDRATING INGREDIENTS

As we mentioned above, hydration is always key when it comes to dry skin. Seek formulas that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin or panthenol to restore hydration while protecting the skin. You can also opt for a hybrid moisturizer/sunscreen product to simplify your skincare routine.

3.     AVOID COMMON IRRITANTS

Dry skin can often be sensitive and easily irritant, so it’s important to look for a sunscreen free of common irritants, like fragrances and alcohol. These can potentially contribute to dry skin concerns.

4.     USE GENTLER MINERAL SUNSCREEN

Mineral sunscreens (containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) are often less irritating and better suited for sensitive or dry skin. They can sometimes leave a white cast, but newer formulations are much better at minimising this.

5.     MOISTURISE BEFORE SUNSCREEN

Because dry skin lacks moisture, moisturiser is doubly as important. Even if you use a hydrating sunscreen, you should still use a moisturiser. Lock in hydration with a nourishing moisturiser and finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

6.     USE CREAMS OR LOTIONS

Choose cream or lotion formulas over gels or sprays, as these tend to be more hydrating. Creams are particularly good for very dry skin.

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE. FOR USE.
