Pimples Around the Mouth: Causes and Remedies

Pimples around the mouth can be a stubborn and persistent issue. Blemishes and spots around the mouth can be caused by a number of factors beyond just hormones or clogged pores. Lip products, toothpaste, hygiene, and more can contribute to acne breakouts around the mouth, but fortunately they can be managed. In this article, we’ll break down common causes of these breakouts around the mouth, and how to prevent and manage them for clearer, smoother skin.

What causes pimples around the mouth?

Pimples around the mouth are a common occurrence and can be caused by several factors. These factors can also contribute to the type, frequency and appearance of the pimple.

1. Hormones

Hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause can trigger increased sebum production, making the skin around the mouth more prone to breakouts. Hormonal pimples may appear as whiteheads, blackheads or raised bumps.

2. Contact with irritants

Toothpaste, mouthwash, certain foods (especially acidic or greasy ones), and lip products can irritate the delicate skin around the mouth. They may appear as a few red spots or a larger cluster of pimples, redness, and sometimes itching sensations. Allergic reactions to ingredients in these products can also manifest as pimples or other skin irritations.

3. Friction and pressure

Regular contact with phones, musical instruments (like flutes or trumpets), or even frequently touching your face around the mouth can transfer impurities and oil, leading to breakouts. Friction and pressure can cause white pimples or smaller red bumps.

4. Cosmetics and skincare

Heavy or pore-clogging makeup, lip balms, and skincare products can trap oil and debris, contributing to pimples around the mouth. Similar to pimples caused by friction and pressure, they may cause raised whiteheads, redness or bumps.

5. Diet

While the link between diet and pimples isn't fully understood, you may find that consuming greasy or sugary foods can exacerbate breakouts.

6. Stress

High levels of stress can lead to increased cortisol production (often called the “stress hormone”), which can increase sebum production and contribute to clogged pores and pimples.

7. Poor hygiene

Not cleansing the face regularly and properly, especially if you wear makeup or after exercise, can lead to a buildup of oil and impurities around the mouth, causing blocked pores and pimples.

8. Underlying skin conditions

In some instances, pimples, redness or bumps around the mouth are signs of a skin condition that may require a targeted remedy or consultation with a dermatologist.

How to prevent and manage pimples and acne around the mouth

Preventing pimples around the mouth involves a combination of good hygiene practices, careful product choices, and lifestyle adjustments. Here's a breakdown:

1. Keep the area clean

Wash your face twice daily with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser, and avoid harsh scrubs or soaps, which can irritate the skin. At the end of the day, make sure to also use a makeup remover or hybrid makeup remover/cleanser to ensure all traces of makeup are removed before bed.

2. Choose products wisely

Opt for makeup, lip balms, moisturisers, and sunscreens labeled "non-comedogenic," meaning they are less likely to clog pores. You should also consider switching to a toothpase of mouthwash formulated for sensitive skin and free of common irritants, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

3. Minimise contact and irritation

Minimising contact with irritants can include a few behavioural changes:

● Avoid touching your face: Keep your hands away from your mouth as much as possible to avoid transferring dirt and oil.

● Clean your phone: Regularly clean your phone screen, as it can harbour bacteria that can contribute to breakouts.

● Clean musical instruments: If you play a wind instrument, clean it regularly to prevent the buildup of impurities and saliva.

4. Dietary considerations

While the link between diet and pimples isn't fully established, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is generally beneficial for your skin. Limiting greasy and sugary foods can also help.

5. Manage stress

Chronic stress can exacerbate breakouts. Incorporate stress-reducing practices like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises into your routine.

6. Laundry habits:

Change pillowcases frequently to help reduce the transfer of oil and impurities to your face – especially important if you sleep on your stomach or on your side. You should also wash and change over your face towels frequently to prevent a buildup of oil and dirt.

7. Consult a dermatologist

When pimples around the mouth are persistent or cause significant discomfort, it’s important to speak to a dermatologist to determine or rule out certain skin conditions. A dermatologist will also be able to recommend skincare and any remedies to address the problem.

Skincare for breakouts on the mouth

A tailored skincare regime can help reduce breakouts around the mouth to achieve clearer skin. This includes cleansers, blemish-fighting serums and targeted moisturisers and creams.

Cleansers

An oil free foaming cleanser can help gently lift impurities and excess oil to prevent clogged pores. Avoid harsh cleansers, as these can exacerbate the problem.
