How to Prep Skin for Makeup in 7 Steps

Whether you have a daily makeup routine or only bring out your makeup on special occasions, the right makeup products make a huge difference to your final look. But did you know your skincare can be just as important as the makeup you choose?

Your pre-makeup skincare routine is essential to keeping the skin hydrated and protected, and can minimise the risks of some makeup formulas drying out the skin or clogging pores. Read on for our tips on how to prep the skin for your makeup routine.

PRE-MAKEUP SKINCARE ROUTINE

Your pre-makeup skincare routine should include all the features of a daily routine: cleanser, moisturiser and protection from irritants. Keep your skincare lightweight, non-comedogenic and simple, and make sure you’re incorporating plenty of hydrating ingredients. Let’s break down your pre-makeup routine step-by-step.

1. CLEANSER

Always start your morning by cleansing your skin so you’ve an even base. A gentle foaming cleanser, like the Toleriane Foaming Gel Cleanser, will remove dead skin cells and any excess oil on the skin's surface so your skin can absorb products better.

2. TONER

Toners tighten pores and smooth out skin texture. They also play a role in restoring pH levels to strengthen the skin moisture barrier. While toner isn’t an essential part of your skincare routine, it can be beneficial in a pre-makeup routine, as some makeup can clog pores leading to unwanted breakouts that can be tough to conceal. Follow your cleanser with a toning facial mist, like the Serozinc Mattifying Toning Facial Mist.

3. SERUMS

Apply serums just after toner and before moisturiser. Depending on your skin type, a vitamin C serum, like the Vitamin C 12 Brightening Serum is a great addition to a pre-makeup skincare routine. Vitamin C can neutralise free radicals that affect the skin moisture barrier, while also helping reduce the chance of your makeup oxidising.

4. MOISTURISER

Add a hydrating face cream or moisturiser to keep your face soft and plump. Dry skin can make fine lines and wrinkles more defined and lead to unwanted foundation creases. Hydrated skin helps ensure makeup glides on smoothly for an even finish, so always include a humectant-rich moisturiser, like the Toleriane Dermallergo Fluid Lightweight Moisturiser, into your pre-makeup skincare routine. Because the eye area is more prone to drying out, you might want to add extra moisture with an eye cream to prep for any eye makeup.

5. BROAD-SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN

Your last skincare addition should be a broad spectrum after moisturiser, high SPF sunscreen. For a smooth, lightweight finish, we recommend the Anthelios Invisible Fluid Facial Sunscreen SPF 50+. This sunscreen has a lightweight finish, making it great for layering under makeup.*

*ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE.

Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection so wear protective clothing and seek shade. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours before and after swimming, towelling and perspiring in accordance with directions.

6. FINISH WITH A MAKEUP PRIMER

Once you've finished your skincare routine you can start applying makeup. In addition to your skincare routine, a primer is a great way to create a smooth base for applying makeup.

7. ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP BEFORE BED!

Before bed, always finish the day with a fresh face, removing all traces of makeup to prevent clogged pores. A gentle cleanser containing micellar water is suitable for both washing the face of impurities as well as removing makeup. We recommend the Micellar Foaming Water Cleanser to clear the face of impurities and remove all traces of makeup before bed.
