What is My UV Patch?
The La Roche-Posay My UV Patch is the first flexible, ultra-thin and connectable UV sensor designed to measure sun exposure. My UV Patch works by using UV sensitive dyes that change colour when exposed to UV radiation, and is designed to be used in conjunction with the My UV Patch app. The patch is scanned by the app to determine your daily exposure to UV, while the app takes into account your details such as skin and hair colour to provide personal UV protection recommendations, and to give tips on sun safe behaviour.
How is My UV Patch helpful to me?
La Roche-Posay has made skin cancer prevention a priority. Australia has the leading incidence of skin cancer worldwide, and melanoma – the deadliest form – is projected to be the 4th most common cancer in Australia this year*. Our mission was to develop an innovative and easy to use device that measures your UV exposure in real time, whether you get sun exposure from walking the dog, the morning commute, in the playground or on the job. My UV Patch is an innovation in wearable technology that will tell you about your sun exposure and offer tips on how protect your skin and play safe in the sun. *https://canceraustralia.gov.au/affected-cancer/what-cancer/cancer-australia-statistics
What does it look like?
The patch is approximately the size of a 50 cent coin and ultra-thin at just half the thickness of an average strand of hair. The patch is designed with a heart filled with various shades of blue and white squares, which contain photosensitive dyes.
What are the characteristics of My UV Patch?
My UV Patch is the first flexible, ultra-thin and connectable device that uses photosensitive dyes. The patch can be scanned and analysed by My UV Patch app. It's a totally new way of measuring UV in an accurate way. Flexible means that is has similar mechanical properties to your skin and it flexes and stretches together with your skin. Unlike most other wearable UV stickers on the market, My UV Patch provides quantitative data through the app to assess UV exposure. For the first time, My UV Patch factors in perceived skin tone and existing sunscreen application to accurately estimate personal UV risk. Through My UV Patch app, you will be better informed about your individual UV exposure.
Unlike most other wearable UV stickers on the market that provide qualitative visual data, My UV Patch provides quantitative data to assess UV exposure. For the first time, My UV Patch factors in perceived skin tone and existing sunscreen application to accurately estimate personal UV risk. Through My UV Patch app, you will be better informed about your individual UV exposure.
How does it work?
As the photosensitive dyes within the patch are exposed to UV rays, they change colour. This colour change is then quantified by the app and the personalised UV dose is calculated. The app takes into account your unique skin tone and provides a personal “sun stock” recommendation to notify you with tips to encourage sun-safe behaviour.
Do you have to manually perform a scan of the patch?
Yes. The app integrates a technology that enables an automatic scan once it has detected the shape of the heart.
How many days can you wear it?
The UV Patch works best for up to 5 days usage.
Where should you put it?
The patch can adhere directly to any area of skin that you want to monitor. To achieve the most accurate reading, it is recommended that the patch is worn on the back of the hand for up to 5 days.
Can you apply sunscreen on the patch?
Yes, along with applying sunscreen to your exposed skin 15 minutes before sun exposure, the sunscreen should also be applied to the patch. This way the patch will be able to accurately measure the amount of UV exposure on your sunscreen-protected skin.
Is My UV Patch durable?
Yes. We wanted to design a patch that was thin, comfortable and virtually undetectable. The patch has been designed so you can sleep, exercise, shower or swim all while having your UV exposure measured in real time.
Does My UV Patch factor in location and time of day?
Yes. When you scan the patch into the My UV Patch app, it factors in your GPS location and time of day – and it also takes into account ozone concentration which is a significant factor for Australian users.
Does the app tell you when to reapply sunscreen?
Yes it does. The app is designed to provide you with information about your personal UV exposure and tailor sun-safe notifications.
Can it monitor UV exposure on areas that aren't just skin e.g. hair?
Is it physically reading info from the skin?
Yes, it reads the amount of UV that hits the skin and as the patch is so thin, it essentially acts as a second skin.
Has the patch been tested on children?
Does it interfere with any implanted medical devices (like a pacemaker), skin conditions or topical medications?
La Roche-Posay recommends applying the My UV Patch on healthy skin only that is not undergoing any treatment. It has not been tested for interactions with topical drugs or medical devices. My UV Patch is not a medical device.
Is My UV Patch comforatble? Can the skin breathe with it?
The patch is permeable so it does not result in skin occlusion. The patch is also ultra-thin, flexible and virtually undetectable for your comfort.
Will the patch leave a pale mark on the skin?
No, not if you apply the appropriate amount sunscreen to the skin and the patch.
