Choosing skincare during pregnancy can feel like a difficult task. With any quick internet search revealing endless, often conflicting advice around which skincare products to use while pregnant, it’s no wonder many mums-to-be can get confused.

However, we’re here to tell you that skincare for pregnant women really doesn’t need to be so complicated! While it’s important to discuss with a medical professional any emerging pregnancy-related skin concerns such as melasma or breakouts, a pared-back skincare routine during pregnancy is a good starting point.

To discover how La Roche-Posay skincare can help you care for your skin while pregnant, read on.

Skincare Ingredients to Avoid
During Pregnancy

We're often asked which skincare ingredients should be avoided during pregnancy. It really does depend on individual circumstances; however, it is advisable to start by avoiding the following:

  • Retinoids (Vitamin A, retinol)
  • Hydroquinone
  • Salicylic acid
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Certain essential oils

Regardless of your skin type, hydrating and moisturising products should be part of your daily skincare routine during pregnancy. With no fragrances and minimal ingredients, La Roche-Posay Toleriane has been created for sensitive, irritation-prone skin, and is a great minimalist skincare range that can be incorporated into your pared-back routine.

As for sun protection? It should be a non-negotiable.

Face Washes and Moisturisers
while Pregnant

Free from fragrances, preservatives and surfactants, Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser is La Roche-Posay’s minimalist face and eye cleanser formulated for sensitive skin. Rinse-off or rinse-free, the milky cleanser is enriched with moisturising glycerin and prebiotic La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water for additional comfort.

Alternatively, our soap-free, pH 5.5 Toleriane Foaming Gel may appeal to those who prefer a foaming face wash, while the Toleriane Caring Wash Cleanser is suited to dry to very dry sensitive skin. With Coco-betaine to remove impurities without stripping skin, it boasts soothing and hydrating La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, alongside niacinamide, glycerin and panthenol.

The Toleriane range also includes moisturisers for all sensitive skin types, ranging from oily-prone to dry. While the Sensitive and Sensitive Riche Facial Moisturisers contain prebiotics to support a healthy skin microbiome, our Toleriane Ultra moisturisers and eye cream feature ultra-hermetic packaging to prevent contamination of their preservative-free, minimalist formulas.

Sun Protection and Sunscreen
while Pregnant

Daily broad-spectrum, high-level sun protection is essential for all women, all year round, to protect against damaging and ageing UV rays.

Providing very high-level UVA and UVB protection for sensitive skin, Anthelios is La Roche-Posay’s sun care range, ideal for everyday wear. With invisible formulas (and tinted options available), all Anthelios products are dermatologically tested and formulated with hypoallergenic (or no) fragrance.

Lightweight, non-greasy and non-comedogenic, Anthelios XL Ultra-Light Fluid SPF 50+ delivers broad spectrum protection for normal to combination skin. With a matte finish, Anthelios XL Anti-Shine Dry Touch SPF 50+ is suitable for oily and acne-prone skin types, while Anthelios Ultra Facial Sunscreen is best for nourishing dry, sensitive skin.

Pregnancy is also the perfect time to pamper your body, with gentle body washes and balms formulated to hydrate your skin. Suitable for dry to very dry skin, the La Roche-Posay Lipikar range is gentle enough for both your own and baby’s skin.

Ideal for daily use, the soap and fragrance-free Lipikar Syndet AP+ Wash Cream is formulated with soothing La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water to gently cleanse dry, sensitive skin. For intensive lipid replenishment and anti-itching efficacy, follow with Lipikar Baume AP+. A non-greasy, fragrance-free body balm, Baume AP+ contains niacinamide, shea butter and prebiotic Aqua Posae Filiformis to promote a balanced skin microbiome and natural skin barrier function for reduced dryness and itching.
