How to Start the Year with Clearer Skin
Heading back to school or work can be anxiety-inducing for anyone, but for those with acne, it can often be a real challenge. A common concern, acne is experienced by 80% of teenagers and 40% of adults around the globe*, and its effects are more than just physical. For adolescents in particular, acne is often linked to poor self-esteem and increased social isolation.
Thankfully, a new year presents the perfect opportunity to start afresh and make clearer skin a reality. Read on for a simple, targeted skincare regime designed to visibly transform oily, acne-prone skin for good.
What Causes Acne?
Occurring in the areas with the most sebaceous glands – typically the face, chest, back and shoulders – acne ranges from painless blackheads and whiteheads to painful, pustular pimples and cysts. Hormones, stress, overproduction of oil, a heightened inflammatory response, and sluggish cellular turnover are all factors that can contribute to acne breakouts, and these can differ from person to person.
In all acne-prone individuals, however, there is an increased incidence of dead skin cells and sebum clumping together within a hair follicle, or pore, to create a ‘plug’. This could be due to an excess production of sebum, or inefficiently shedding dead skin cells. Either way, oil accumulates and bacteria proliferates within the blocked pore. When white blood cells spring into action to fight off infection, a swollen, pustular pimple emerges.
While some pimples seem to spring up overnight, it actually takes around three weeks from the follicle becoming blocked for the blemish to appear. Treating surface acne alone is therefore a mere band-aid solution, and successful acne management requires a longer-term view. Products must simultaneously address the root cause of problem skin while improving visible blemishes.
Skincare companies and dermatologists are increasingly acknowledging that successful acne management begins with maintaining a healthy microbiome. As, without sufficient bacterial diversity on the skin, ongoing inflammation can cause acne to return again and again.
La Roche-Posay’s 3-Step Solution
Consistency is key when it comes to an anti-acne skincare regime, and our pared-back, three-step routine makes this a breeze.
Step 1 – Cleanse
Cleansing acne-prone skin morning and night is important to remove the dirt, impurities and excess sebum which can block pores and lead to breakouts. Avoid the temptation of using a harsh, moisture-stripping face wash and opt for a gently purifying and soothing alternative.
Formulated for oily, acne-prone sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel refreshes and rebalances the skin. Free from soap, alcohol and colourants, the foaming gel gently cleanses while retaining essential moisture and maintaining skin comfort, with a 25% reduction in blackheads after 4 weeks**.
Step 2 – Moisturise & Correct
If you think acne-prone skin doesn’t require daily moisturisation – think again. When stripped of moisture, oily skin simply overcompensates by producing additional oil. The key, therefore, is using a product that combines corrective care with moisturisation.
Lightweight, hydrating and non-greasy, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo (+) not only improves visible imperfections, it disrupts the breakout cycle. With superior anti-recurrence results, Effaclar Duo (+) increases cellular turnover with exfoliating LHA and Salicylic Acid, while Zinc PCA reduces sebum secretion to keep pores clearer, and breakthrough prebiotic APF + Mannose helps the skin maintain a healthy, balanced microbiome.
At the same time, soothing Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) works to reduce redness and irritation, and Procerad helps minimise post-acne pigmentation.
Step 3 – Protect
To prevent sunburn, skin cancer and premature ageing, daily SPF protection is essential for all skin types, including acne-prone. Despite what many believe the sun can also cause breakouts to become worse.
Created for oily and acne-prone sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Anti-Shine Dry Touch SPF 50+ is not only non-comedogenic, it is visibly mattifying. Lightweight, non-greasy and fragrance-free, it provides a very high level of broad-spectrum UV protection, all while anti-sweat molecule Airlicium absorbs up to 150 times its volume in sebum, sweat and oil.
