Exposure to the sun: maximum safety for all

It is a fact that we are not all equal when it comes to the sun: some skin types have a higher tolerance threshold than others. But whatever your phototype, the right protection can save you from a lot of discomfort.

Very high UVA-UVB protection

For maximum sun protection everyday, La Roche-Posay suggests individuals with sensitive skin or a sun allergy use a product that provides a very high level of protection from UVA and UVB rays.

UVB for Burn

UVB rays are the ones that give you sunburn. Fair skin types are more sensitive to these. They also react more to UVB rays, and thus should use a very high protection factor such as SPF 50+ any time they are exposed.

The protection factor of a sunscreen refers to the duration of the protection: the higher the SPF, the longer the protection will last.

Four golden rules

  • Avoid exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is the period when ultraviolet rays are at their most dangerous.
  • Keep children in the shade. For safety, children under the age of 3 should not be exposed at all.
  • Cover up. Opaque clothing should be worn when possible, along with wide-brimmed hats and filtering sunglasses.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours even if it is water-resistant. Remember to apply sufficient sunscreen to the back of the neck, the ears and the feet and more frequently if sweating, swimming or towelling.

UVA for Age

Year round, whatever the location or the season, UVA rays are with us all the time. These include long UVA rays:

  • These are the most common and are present year round, even in cloudy conditions
  • Tthey penetrate to the core of the dermis and cause irreversible damage to the skin
  • They are responsible for photoaging. Whatever the phototype, even if sensitivity to UV rays may be different, the risk remains.

This is why it is recommended to use daily protection with a sufficient protection factor.
