How to Manage Rosacea

A concern for 45 million people worldwide1, rosacea is one of the most common skin complaints seen by dermatologists. However, 80% of those exhibiting its clinical signs of redness, flushing, and discomfort don’t know the name for what they’re experiencing.  More common in women, the causes of rosacea are unknown. While medical intervention may be needed, a targeted skincare plan, combined with lifestyle changes, can go a long way towards improving the sensitive skin condition and boosting skin confidence.

WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a chronic and progressive skin condition, primarily affecting the face, that manifests through extreme skin sensitivity. Transitory redness – which can become permanent, small dilated blood vessels, and spots on the cheeks, sides of the nose or chin are key signs, often accompanied by dry, irritated eyes. As well as these visible signs, rosacea sufferers experience discomfort in the form of stinging, hot flashes, tightness and burning sensations. As rosacea worsens with age, early treatment and management through the right skincare can be highly beneficial.

4 STAGES OF ROSACEA

If left unchecked, rosacea can progress through four distinct stages. In the pre-rosacea stage, you will experience fleeting redness and flushing. Stage 2 is characterised by diffuse redness and the appearance of small vessels on the skin’s surface. Stage 3 is inflammatory rosacea, where small spots – sometimes with white heads – emerge. In stage 4, the skin is thickened, and areas of swelling may occur. This severe form of rosacea is more common in men.

ENVIRONMENTAL & LIFESTYLE TRIGGERS

There are many environmental and lifestyle factors that contribute to rosacea flare-ups. Sun exposure, sudden temperature changes, cold winds, warm environments such as saunas and centrally heated rooms, and hot baths and showers are common triggers. Alcohol, certain foods including dairy and spicy foods, topical steroids, and physical exertion/exercise also come into play. As do stress, anxiety, and menopause. Skincare and cosmetics containing alcohol and fragrance can also be problematic.

YOUR 4-STEP ROSACEA ACTION PLAN…

Step 1: Use daily sun protection
According to a survey from the National Rosacea Society (US), sun exposure is the number one trigger for rosacea. 88% of respondents said efforts to shield their skin had some success in reducing their flare-ups2. Therefore, daily application of a high level, broad-spectrum sunscreen is the crucial first step of rosacea management.
